Perspective: Data Centres: Next Gen Infra Class - Opportunity to Showcase Systems Outcomes

Research: Be Part of an Open Initiative to Map Australia’s key Infrastructure Networks and Systems

Data centers drive immense value but place significant demands on infrastructure. As of July 2025, a large-scale data center being planned could consume up to 5000 MW of power, comparable to Sweden's energy consumption, and others are demanding water flows of 200 liters per second, equivalent to the daily water use of approximately 100000 households. Typical larger data centers currently planned use 200 to 400 MW and around 100 liters of water per second.

A complete rethink, a systems-based approach, to integrate these facilities sustainably into existing infrastructure and planning outcomes. Many data centers are adopting sustainability measures, targeting energy and water offsets, with some at 130% of consumption.
